U.S. Appellate Court Shoots Down Delaware's Sports Betting Plans

After a hearing on Monday, 24 August, the three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has ruled that the State of Delaware cannot offer single-game sports betting, because doing so "violates the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act."
The case was not yet scheduled to go to trial, but because the parties did not dispute any material facts, the judges were able to make an immediate ruling based on the merits of law.
A 1992 federal law banning sports betting in America had exempted Delaware and three other states TO THE EXTENT that those states offered legal sports betting previously. Delaware had offered NFL betting in the form of parlay bets in 1976, but they never offered betting on individual games.
State legislators had planned to expand to reopen the availability of legal betting in the State, and in doing so to offer single-game bets and wagers on college games and professional sports.
Based on the court's decision, Delaware will only be able to offer parlay bets. It remains to be seen whether they will pursue further litigation of the matter, or whether they will proceed with a parlay betting only system.
Of course, there's always online betting for those that want to bet on individual sports matchups...
